Having a dog as a loyal family pet can be an enriching experience for both canine and human alike. However, not every dog owner is a responsible and caring person who treats their dog like a member of the family. All too many individuals raise their dogs to be vicious, either for the purposes of using them as a guard dog or to use them for fighting. Often, these dogs are mistreated and can become aggressive without any provocation in the blink of an eye. When dogs attack, the results can be devastating, resulting in major injuries like lacerations and puncture wounds that can leave victims disfigured for life or in dire need of costly reconstructive surgery. However, dog attack victims have the right to pursue justice via the legal system by suing the dog that attacked them’s owners. If you were hurt in a dog attack and want to talk to a dog bite lawyer about your options under the law as an attack victim, contact Mayer & Rosenberg, P.C. today to learn more about your legal rights.
Although some of the most inherently aggressive canine breeds are smaller dogs such as Chihuahuas, the most destructive breeds are those larger, stronger breeds of dog like German shepherds and Labrador retrievers. According to a 15-year-long study of dog bite deaths in the state of Kentucky published in the American Journal of Forensic Medicine and Pathology in 2009, the majority of dog bite deaths were caused by large-breed dogs (“pit bull” type dogs, Rottweilers, and German shepherd breeds were mentioned), and most of the victims were under 6 years of age. Data published by the American Veterinary Medical Association revealed that the most highly represented breeds in dog bite incidents were German shepherds, mixed-breed dogs, and “pit bull” dogs, followed by Rottweilers and Jack Russel terriers. Although the Jack Russel terriers may have had a high incidence of attacks, their attacks are less likely to result in major injury or fatality compared with larger breeds due to their smaller size and weaker jaw strength.
