Local Downtown Hero Killed In Pedestrian Crash

On Behalf of | Jun 1, 2019 | Vehicle Accidents

We never like to bring you sad news, but we have learned that one of the biggest advocates for downtown Kansas City has died in a tragic accident. Jared Miller, 34, was out for his morning run late last month when he was struck by a semi-truck.

At Mayer & Rosenberg, P.C., we want to express our condolences to Miller’s family. This is a tragedy for all of Kansas City.

Today, we want to discuss these incidents and why someone may need a pedestrian accident attorney in Kansas City.

Who Was Jared Miller?

“Jared was loved by so many,” said Julie Miller, Jared’s wife. “There was no one in the world like my sweet guy.”

Jared was a Kansas City downtown enthusiast. Though he was young, he worked hard to improve the downtown experience for everyone. He was an early advocate for the streetcar and he was also a member of the Kansas City Regional Transit Alliance. Jared also served as president of the Downtowners organization.

Jared was struck by a semi-truck while crossing the North Loop freeway from the River Market. The trucker did not see Jared until it was too late to avoid hitting him.

At the time of his death, he was actually working on a project that would remove the area of the highway where he died.

Pedestrian Crashes Happen

We wish we could get the total number of pedestrian crashes in the city to zero. So many of these incidents are preventable and happen in areas where pedestrian have the right-of-way. Injuries from pedestrian crashes can vary widely and often include:

Victims of pedestrian crashes are often left with massive medical bills and long periods of rehabilitation. In many cases, victims are not able to work while they are recovering from their injuries. This lost income can significantly hurt the financial stability of their families.

For the latest reporting year in Missouri, we know that there were 1,451 total pedestrian crashes. Out of those, 101 people were killed and 1,391 were injured. Nearly every pedestrian crash resulted in an injury or fatality. Pedestrians simply do not have any ways to absorb the impact of a vehicle slamming into them. Please understand that pedestrians usually suffer two impacts – one with the vehicle and one with the ground, both of which can cause serious injuries.
