Price Increases for Kansas City Bird Scooter Rentals

On Behalf of | May 18, 2019 | Scooter Accident

Now that the warm weather has returned, Kansas City residents are going back to riding bicycles and scooters outdoors. One thing Bird scooter riders may notice is that the rental price has more than doubled for the electric scooters and city officials are reportedly looking into alternative scooter options so that Kansas City residents may have less expensive electric scooter rentals. Kansas City bird scooter accident lawyers are watching these electric scooter developments unfold and anticipate that if there is an increase in scooter rental options, there will likely be an increase in electric scooter traffic throughout the city.

Bird scooter cost increase

Last year, residents were renting Bird scooters in Kansas City for 15 cents per minute. This year, Bird has increased their rental cost from 15 cents to 33 cents per minute. That may not make a difference for the casual and infrequent scooter renter, but for people who rent scooters on a regular basis, the cost may end up being significant for them. For example, last year a 20 minute ride would cost $3.00 and this year, a 20 minute ride will cost $6.60. That extra $3.60 per ride is going to add up for frequent electric scooter renters.

Kansas City’s response

Without any competition for Bird, the company has basically left people with the option of paying more or not renting scooters anymore because they do not currently have any real competition in Kansas City. According to a KCTV5 report, however, the city is reviewing proposals from several other electric scooter rental companies and if the competition increases, Bird may be forced to cut back their rates in order to remain competitive.

There is little known about the other proposals except that Lime, the company that halted scooter rentals in Kansas City late last year, has said that they have submitted a proposal to return to the city and KCATA has hinted that there might be a RideKC model in the works. For now, but likely not for long, Kansas City residents are stuck paying the extra 18 cents per minute.

More electric scooter accident injuries in the E.R.

Kansas City hospital emergency rooms have reported an increase in the number of patients stopping in with electric scooter injuries since the rentals came to the city last year. Injuries can be severe in electric scooter accidents, especially for riders who were not wearing a helmet at the time of the accidents. Common electric scooter accident injuries include traumatic brain injuries, back and neck injuries, broken bones, cuts and lacerations, broken teeth, and road rash from sliding on pavement.

Causes of electric scooter accidents

When scooter riders are injured in accidents caused by someone else’s fault, they deserve to be compensated. At fault parties may include automobile drivers, other scooter riders, bicyclists, government entities responsible for dangerous roadway conditions, or anyone else whose negligence or recklessness contributed to or caused the accident.
