What We Know Can Happen

We recently learned that a Jackson County sheriff’s deputy that was involved in an on-duty crash that severely injured an innocent driver a year ago is facing charges. The deputy, Sean Stoff, has been charged with:

  • One count of operating a vehicle in a careless and imprudent manner

The crash happened when deputies were involved in a vehicle chase of another driver. Stoff, according to reports, eventually deactivated his vehicle’s emergency lights and siren but continued to drive at high speeds. Stoff eventually came to the red light but continued through, slamming into Chris Reed’s vehicle, a driver who had nothing to do with the pursuit.

Dash cam footage shows that Stoff was driving at 71 mph at the time of impact and did not slow down as he approached the intersection.

  • Reed is still recovering from a traumatic brain injury

“His daily life is much different than it was before the incident,” says Reed’s attorney.

Vehicle crashes are going to happen. We only have to look at the official statistics for the latest reporting year in Missouri to see that there were:

  • 153,422 total vehicle crashes
  • 923 crash fatalities
  • 57,270 crash injuries

While we know that most vehicle crash injuries are minor, that is not always the case. Some injuries, including the following, can lead to massive medical expenses:

What many people fail to consider in most cases are the hidden costs associated with these crashes. As we saw in the story above, the victim’s life has been altered. How can you put a price on a loss of enjoyment of life?
