Birth Control Pills Recalled For Packaging Problem

by | Apr 6, 2019 | Product Liability

In early March, the US Food and Drug Administration issued a warning about a birth control pill manufactured by Apotex Corporation. They say that four lots of the pills may contain defective blister packets that incorrectly label the tablet arrangements and/or an empty blister pocket. This may not seem like a big deal, but this could lead to cases of unintended pregnancy.

At Mayer & Rosenberg, P.C., we know that faulty products can cause major injuries or illnesses. In extreme cases, they can even cause death. If you need a product liability lawyer in Kansas City, contact us today so we can get to work on securing the compensation you deserve.

What Happened Here?

The FDA says that these defective birth control lots could lead to users not taking a tablet or taking a placebo instead of an active tablet, leading to “an adverse event or even pregnancy.” This may not sound like a big deal, but it is.

Unintended pregnancies can cause major health consequences. Many women take birth control because they are at risk of major complications in the event they become pregnant. They should be able to rely on the stated effectiveness of their medication. So far, there have been no reports of unintended pregnancies due to the Apotex product.

Other Recalls

Many people do not realize that faulty products are a big problem. If you go look at the government website that tracks current recalls, you will see hundreds of items that span every industry. This includes medications, foods, beverages, vehicles, toys, appliances, cleaning products and more.

How do faulty products happen?

  • They have a bad design to begin with that somehow escaped notice during the testing phases of the product.
  • They experience an error during the manufacturing process that alters them from their design, making them dangerous for consumers.
  • They are labeled incorrectly. This could mean that they do not have the proper instructions or dosage, are missing ingredients, leave off warnings and hazards, and more.

In all of these cases, it can lead to defective product ending up in the hands of unknowing consumers. The last thing we expect when we buy something for ourselves or our families is that it will cause an injury or illness. If that does happen, you need to know where to turn.

We also want to note that many faulty products cause harm over long periods of time (baby powder, insecticides, and tobacco are all examples of this).
