The companies have already recalled about 2.4 million vehicles since 2015 and their problems have prompted investigations by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The problems seem to be centered around high exhaust gas temperatures that cause abnormal combustion and damage to the pistons and connecting rods. This allows the rods to pierce the engine, causing oil leaks and fires.
