Four Killed In Tractor-Trailer Crash

by | Dec 7, 2018 | Truck Accident

We want to bring you this developing story about a crash that happened last week on Interstate 70. The Missouri State Highway Patrol says that a tractor-trailer, driven by a 63-year-old man from Ohio, struck the rear end of stopped vehicles, causing them to strike other vehicles.

All told, there were three passenger vehicles and three tractor-trailers involved in this chain-reaction accident that killed four people.

Police say that the interstate was already shut down because of an earlier vehicle fire, but we still have many questions.

Why did the driver of the tractor-trailer not see stopped traffic?

Was there a problem with his brake system?

At Mayer & Rosenberg, P.C., we know that large trucks can cause serious damage. Do you know where to turn if you are involved in a similar incident?

When you need a truck accident lawyer Kansas City, you can turn to our knowledgeable and experienced team for help.

So Many Trucks

We rely on large commercial trucks to keep our economy flowing. How many of these do you see when you hit the road each day?

  • Dump trucks
  • Cement trucks
  • Box trucks
  • Panel trucks
  • Eighteen wheelers
  • Delivery trucks
  • Tanker trucks

Each of these vehicles has the potential to cause major damage due to their size and weight, especially when they are carrying a load.

Truck companies have a duty to regularly inspect and maintain their fleets to ensure that nothing goes wrong with the vehicles while they are at a high rate of speed. In fact, vehicle failure is the main cause of large truck accidents. If something goes wrong with the following systems, then the driver can lose control:

  • powertrain
  • brakes
  • steering system
  • suspension
  • tires or wheels

We also know that negligent or careless drivers can cause major accidents. Drivers should always follow law and regulations that dictate how many hours they can drive each day as well as how much weight they are allowed to carry at one time. If they fail to do this, they can cause major problems on the roadway.

Impaired drivers are also a problem. If a driver chooses to operate after having a drink or using drugs, they are jeopardizing many lives. We also know that distracted drivers are dangerous. If a driver is focused on text messages or videos on their phones or other devices, they are not paying attention to the road.
