It’s common knowledge that certain jobs are more dangerous and risky than others. Mineworkers, chemical plant employees, and people who work with heavy equipment are all at risk for injury. But what about Missouri desk workers? What about the people who have office jobs without the added risk of overtly dangerous environments?
It may come as a surprise, but desk workers face their own set of hazards that can potentially threaten their overall health and safety. Business Insider published an article about all of the ways that desk work can be harmful, going as far as to say that it can destroy the body. They cite issues like chronic back pain, and even higher risks for issues like diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and more. Worse still is the fact that regular workouts apparently don’t combat the stress of sitting for so long every day. Stress and fatigue can also result from overworking and overexposure to computer screens, both of which are common among office jobs.
The Society for Human Resource Management highlights five other common workplace hazards that could affect anyone in an office situation. This includes hot button issues like air quality indoors, which can reportedly be up to 100 times worse than the air outside. Workers may believe they’re okay because they don’t work in a plant or a place that processes chemicals or gases, but that doesn’t mean their building is free of gas, mold, or other harmful particles. In fact, photocopiers and laser printers can emit harmful ozone that can damage a worker’s lungs just as badly as foreign particles or fumes.
This just scratches the surface of the hazards that desk job and office workers face. Getting a comprehensive look at these specific dangers can help prepare workers who may otherwise not expect or understand the injuries they may receive while on the job.
