Preventing back injuries
Employees can frequently face situations which might result in back injury or strain. Because of this, workers in Missouri should be aware of the preventative measures they can take to limit their chances of injuring their back while on the job.
First, the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion states that many ways to prevent back injury involve small changes to people’s everyday lives. This can include:
- Keeping straight posture while standing and sitting
- Eat well and exercise regularly
- Do exercises specifically meant to strengthen back muscles 2-3 times a week
By strengthening the back muscles through exercise and good posture, strain-related injuries are less likely to happen. Additionally, it is suggested that activities which may cause muscle stress should be avoided. This especially includes heavy lifting, which is a primary culprit in many acute and chronic back problems.
However, there are some cases in which lifting heavy objects cannot be avoided. In these situations, Family Doctor states that there are a number of steps that should be taken to lift the object as safely as possible. These steps include:
- Stretching before lifting
- Making sure there’s enough room to lift safely
- Taking breaks when needed
- Keeping an eye on the surroundings
- Avoiding surfaces that are difficult to walk on
Most importantly, if something is too heavy to lift, assistance should be requested. If strain is exerted to lift an object, it is likely too heavy. In following these steps, it is possible to cut down in the chances of dealing with a back injury.
