Causes of back strain and injury

Many workers in Missouri are not aware of the fact that their job could be wreaking havoc on their back. It does not take a job with high physical demands to cause back strain or injury. Because of this, it is important for workers everywhere to be on the lookout for activities that may be causing or worsening their back pain.

According to Spine Health, one of the main causes of back strain involves stretching the muscles too far. This can cause mild to severe muscular weakness depending on what the level of damage is. When the muscles become too weak, they are unable to properly support the spine. This can cause back pain. Activities linked to muscular stretching include:

  • Falling
  • Crouching and bending repeatedly
  • Lifting objects that are too heavy
  • Lifting multiple large objects a day
  • Large amounts of physical exertion

These can occur in nearly any job, making muscular stretching or even tearing a possibility for many people in the workforce.

While muscular damage and weakness are common causes, other reasons for back pain can include having improper posture, sitting in one place for long periods of time, or pinching nerves. As stated by Mayo Clinic, there are also certain conditions that can be worsened by these activities, such as arthritis or sprains. If people move around too much while their back is already stressed, they may end up worsening the damage and causing more severe injury such as torn ligaments, thus worsening their pain even further.

Back injuries can be detrimental to a person’s quality of life and their ability to work. Keeping an eye on the different potential sources of back injury can save people from the trouble of dealing with that stress.
