Drivers often fail to yield to motorcyclists

At Mayer and Rosenberg, we believe that those who are hurt as a result of others’ negligence should be compensated for their losses. It can be especially important to pursue compensation after motorcycle accidents, as they often produce severe injuries and fatalities. Over the years, our Missouri attorneys have become well versed in identifying key factors which may contribute to serious motorcycle accidents.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, many motorcycle crashes are caused by motorists’ failure to yield. The federal agency studied the outcomes of crashes involving motorcycles and other vehicles. These findings show that in over 30 percent of these cases, the motorcyclists had right-of-way to which motorists failed to yield.

Part of the reason the NHTSA initiated its study on motorcycle accidents is that they are disproportionately fatal. In 2005, only 2.5 percent of the country’s registered vehicles were motorcycles. Motorcyclists, however, accounted for over 10 percent of the country’s traffic fatalities in that year. The NHTSA notes that motorcyclists are approximately 37 times more likely to suffer fatal injuries in traffic crashes than motorists.

Motorcycle accidents often leave severe destruction in their wakes. Injured motorcyclists may face high medical bills and long recovery periods. When a motorcyclist dies, the family of that person may be left with heartbreak as well as financial uncertainty. Compensation for these losses may be available through personal injury or wrongful death litigation.
