Avoiding back-related injuries from lifting

Workers in Missouri may have to move heavy items from time to time, even if it isn't in a person's job description. For example, a teacher may one day have to move large amounts of books from one place to another, or an artist could be stuck carrying heavy equipment or blocks of clay. Amidst all these potential back-strainers, what can a person do to keep their back protected from damage?

Lifting things properly is one huge way to avoid back injuries. WebMD has a list of proper lifting techniques that can be used by any worker who has to move around cumbersome, heavy items. According to them, the proper way to lift something is:

  • Keep your feet far apart
  • Squat
  • Lift from the hips, keeping the posture straight

One big mistake people often make is lifting directly from the ground or by bending forward. This can put pressure directly on a person's back and can cause muscle stress, strains or even tears. A person should instead lift from the ground, rising up and keeping their body even while balancing their weight on both feet. The feet should remain as solid anchors on the ground through the entire lifting process.

If a person is being told to lift items incorrectly, or if they are being ordered to lift items that they are physically incapable of lifting without harming themselves, they may wish to seek options that will allow them to avoid doing the lifting. Otherwise, they could end up harming their backs and doing irreversible damage.
