The proper ways to operate a forklift

Missouri workers may occasionally have to deal with the operation of heavy machinery. While many of these already require a license, such as forklifts, there are still plenty of things that drivers should keep in mind while operating their vehicle so that they don’t get into an accident while on the job.

Adaptalift Hyster states that there are several safety tips to keep in mind while operating a forklift that can keep both the driver and everyone around them safe. The most basic tips include being properly qualified to operate the lift, as well as examining machinery before starting. Damaged vehicles could easily cause accidents, so routine equipment checks are necessary and should be thorough. Operators should dress for the part as well, avoiding loose clothes and wearing high visibility gear, safe shoes and helmets.

The Occupational Safety & Health Administration also has an online manual for forklift operation with behaviors to avoid and proper procedures and safety precautions that should be followed. For example, when mounting or dismounting the vehicle, operators should always make sure to avoid hitting their head on the cage or slipping on the steps. Speed limitations should always be obeyed, and the terrain should be taken into consideration when driving. Braking should be done slowly. An operator should never leave the vehicle until it is completely stopped and the ignition is turned off.

There are some accidents or situations that cannot be predicted. However, following the basic safe operation guidelines can severely limit a person’s changes of being injured.
